Virmire, la mission suicide et Rannoch effacent des gens. La loyauté est un drapeau de survie.
A Mass Effect squadmate is not a permanent party member. Virmire kills Ashley or Kaidan. Virmire can kill Wrex. The suicide mission can kill anyone you recruited in Mass Effect 2, and Shepard as well if fewer than two of them walk out. Mass Effect 3 then staffs whole arcs with whoever is left: Padok Wiks if Mordin is dead, a geth VI if Legion is dead, Wreav if Wrex is dead.
Legendary Edition includes Kasumi and Zaeed, so a full ME2 roster is twelve people, with Samara and Morinth sharing one slot.

Kaidan Alenko
Already aboard the SR-1.
No separate loyalty mission. Dies if you leave him on Virmire.
Virmire survivor. Female Shepard can romance him in ME1. Either Shepard can start a romance in ME3 if he is alive.
Ashley Williams
Eden Prime, during the prologue.
No separate loyalty mission. Dies if you leave her on Virmire.
Virmire survivor. Romance is male Shepard only.
Garrus Vakarian
ME1: Citadel, near Dr. Michel. ME2: Omega, as Archangel. ME3: after Priority: Palaven.
ME2: find Sidonis on the Citadel.
Hold-the-line score 4 if loyal, 3 if not. Legal fireteam leader. Romance is female Shepard.
Urdnot Wrex
Citadel, C-Sec. Not a squadmate in ME2.
ME1: family armor quest makes the Virmire standoff easier. Without persuasion he can die on Virmire.
If he dies, Wreav leads clan Urdnot. The genophage sabotage is much harder to hide from Wrex than from Wreav.
Tali'Zorah
ME1: Citadel. ME2: Haestrom. ME3: during the Rannoch arc, and she stays only if the quarians survive.
ME2: Tali: Treason, on the Migrant Fleet. Not presenting the evidence is +2 toward Rannoch peace.
Name becomes vas Normandy when she is loyal and not exiled. Hold-the-line score 1 if loyal, 0 if not. Legal vent specialist. Romance is male Shepard and must start in ME2.
Liara T'Soni
Therum in ME1. Priority: Mars in ME3. In ME2 she is a temporary partner in Lair of the Shadow Broker, not a Normandy squadmate.
No ME2 loyalty. Shadow Broker is her story DLC.
Romance works for either Shepard across all three games. The Shadow Broker reunion is the ME2 chapter.
Miranda Lawson
Already aboard after Lazarus Station.
Confront her father. A high check can keep her estranged sister out of his reach.
Legal fireteam leader. Not a legal biotic specialist, even though she volunteers. Hold-the-line score 2 if loyal, 1 if not. Romance is male Shepard.
Jacob Taylor
Already aboard after Lazarus Station.
Jacob: The Gift of Greatness, his father's crashed ship.
Legal fireteam leader. Not a vent specialist — sending him into the vent kills him. Hold-the-line score 2 if loyal, 1 if not. ME2 romance is female Shepard and does not continue; in ME3 he is with Dr. Brynn Cole.
Mordin Solus
Omega, his clinic.
Student Maelon, on Tuchanka.
Weakest hold-the-line score: 1 loyal, 0 otherwise, and first in the death order. Classic loyal escort. If he dies, Padok Wiks replaces him on the genophage.
Jack
Purgatory prison ship.
Pragia, the facility where she was raised.
Legal biotic specialist. Vent specialist she is not. No Silaris Armor kills her on the approach if she was recruited. Hold-the-line score 1 if loyal, 0 if not. Romance is male Shepard.
Grunt
Korlus, in a tank.
Rite of passage with clan Urdnot.
Hold-the-line score 4 if loyal, 3 if not. Leave him on the line. In ME3, a loyal Grunt can survive the Aralakh Company rachni mission; a disloyal one does not.
Samara
Illium.
Hunt her daughter Morinth on Omega. Siding with Morinth kills Samara and replaces her.
Legal biotic specialist. Mutually exclusive with Morinth. Hold-the-line score 2 if loyal, 1 if not. Not a Paramour lock-in.
Morinth
Replaces Samara at the end of Samara's loyalty mission if you side with her.
She arrives loyal to the deal you just made. There is no second loyalty mission.
Counts as the biotic specialist in Samara's slot. The 'embrace eternity' scene kills Shepard. It is not a romance that continues.
Thane Krios
Citadel, Dantius Towers.
His son Kolyat, on the Citadel.
Hold-the-line score 2 if loyal, 1 if not. Not a fireteam leader. Romance is female Shepard. If he survived ME2 he dies during the Citadel coup after facing Kai Leng. If he is already dead, Major Kirrahe takes that scene when Kirrahe survived Virmire.
Legion
Disabled platform from the Reaper IFF. Wake the platform aboard the Normandy. Do not turn it over to Cerberus.
Legion: A House Divided, the heretic station. Do it immediately after recruitment.
Legal vent specialist. Destroying the heretics is +2 toward Rannoch peace; rewriting them is not. The geth VI in ME3 does not count as Legion for the peace check. Hold-the-line score 2 if loyal, 1 if not.
Zaeed Massani
Omega. Price of Revenge ships inside Legendary Edition.
Zorya. Going after Vido first grants loyalty. Saving the refinery workers first requires a paragon or renegade check afterward.
Hold-the-line score 4 if loyal, 3 if not. Not a fireteam leader.
Kasumi Goto
Citadel. Stolen Memory ships inside Legendary Edition.
Bekenstein graybox. Finishing the mission grants loyalty whether you keep the box or destroy it.
Legal vent specialist. Hold-the-line score 1 if loyal, 0 if not. First name on the no-shields death list.
James Vega
With Shepard from the Earth prologue.
No loyalty mission.
A female Shepard with no locked romance can have a one-night scene with him after the Citadel party. It does not grant Paramour.
EDI
The body recovered on Mars comes online early, and she can be fielded after that.
No loyalty mission. Joker unshackles her during the Collector abduction in ME2; that flag is already set if you import a finished ME2 save.
Squadmate only in ME3. She is not in the suicide-mission math.
Javik
From Ashes, the Eden Prime mission, as soon as the marker appears.
No loyalty mission.
Missing him means missing a full game of Prothean comments, including on Thessia. A female Shepard with no locked romance can have a one-night scene after the Citadel party. It does not grant Paramour.
Who is worth a loyalty mission
In Mass Effect 2, loyalty is not a friendship meter for its own sake. It is a survival flag. A disloyal specialist dies in the role they were perfect for. A disloyal squadmate dies if you take them to the final fight. Disloyalty also subtracts one from a hold-the-line score. Do the missions. The two that also move Mass Effect 3's map are Tali: Treason and Legion: A House Divided.
Legion is recruited last, from the Reaper IFF. Wake him, refuse Cerberus, and run his loyalty before you do anything else. That outing is the one free mission before the crew is kidnapped. Every other loyalty should already be done.

Is Liara a squadmate in Mass Effect 2?
Not on the Normandy roster. She fights beside you inside Lair of the Shadow Broker. She returns as a regular squadmate on Mars in Mass Effect 3.
What happens if Wrex dies?
Wreav leads the krogan. You can still deal with the genophage, and you can lie to Wreav more easily. You cannot get Wrex's scenes back without reloading Virmire.
Does a disloyal Grunt matter in Mass Effect 3?
Yes. A loyal Grunt can survive the Aralakh Company fight against the rachni. A disloyal Grunt does not.
